Substance Use Disorder

Abuse of substances has long-term impacts.
Call it whatever – escape, self-medicate, or coping. Reliance on substances starts with negative attempts to fulfill a void within. Through substances that void can be filled, but only temporarily.
In the beginning, it may be to feel pleasure, to improve your ability to focus, or to be the result of peer influence. It could be the result of a lack of self-esteem, inability to cope, or to lessen emotional pain.
It is one of the most painful things parents can experience as they see a child spiral, impacting the child’s relationships, ability to perform in school, and increasing the probability of being in an accident.
Becoming reliant on substances tends to leave a destructive path through the family dynamic, sometimes causing conflicts that last a lifetime.
Fill the void with something positive.
Nobody can predict who is going to have a problem with substances that will cause self-destruction.
What if we could help fill the void in someone before an addiction and/or mental illness takes over?
A mistake is to provide many comforts that prevent a young man from accepting challenges, thus planting the seeds for the pursuit of simple pleasures that often lead to years of physical and mental health consequences.
A young person’s passion must be greater than the pursuit of simple pleasures available to him. Often, this can be aided by proper guidance.
Witnessing a young man take on greater responsibility while avoiding destructive patterns of behavior is a sort of affirmation for parents as they see their son’s self-confidence grow and accomplishments continue.

Early intervention can help.
As a therapist who works with young people struggling with substances, I emphasize early intervention before the dependency turns into a lifestyle. I encourage parents to talk with their child and have open, honest conversations. If overuse of substances is already a problem, then therapy is essential.
My approach is to identify the underlying causes of substance use. By gaining a clear picture, I can implement a therapeutic approach designed to suit the individual’s specific needs.
The key is to motivate the individual to learn to cope with the challenges they face without turning to substances. If the family environment is the problem, we will find ways to enhance positive communication that does not involve criticism or accusations.
Don’t wait! Seeking help is essential.
If your child or someone in your family has an issue with substances, it is better to address the issue before it becomes a serious problem.
